Central Kenya Main Crop Updates

6/16/2017

It's the most wonderful time of the year. It's Central Kenya main crop harvest arrival time.

Yes, fresh harvest Central Kenya coffees are starting to arrive. I have been in Kenya for the last 9 days cupping hundreds of coffees, choosing some stellar microlots, color sorting and grainpro and vacuum packing coffees and getting these containers shipping. Jackson is still there working with our team to build up for the coming Eastern region Main crop from Meru which has just started.

2017 has been a time of progress for Elephant Coffees and our export company Eagle Crown Coffees in Kenya. We fully built out our export office, grew the team with very experienced coffee people, built one of the top coffee grading and cupping labs in Nairobi and just shipped a half dozen containers of sweet Kenya microlots.

If you are looking for truly phenomenal Kenya coffees then you are in luck.

Both Ally Coffees and Bodhi Leave Coffees are bringing in a plethora of wonderfully sweet Kenya coffees that we found for them. Ally is bringing a container to Continental Terminals New Jersey and Bodhi leaf is bringing coffees to both Souther California and Chicago.

While in Kenya Jackson and I cupped almost 150 coffees. Everyone of them except for 2 were freaking amazing. However four of them were truly stunning. They seduced us with deep sweetness, glorious acidity, wonderful fruit flavors and creamy body.

We bought all four.

We did a ton of extra color sorting and density sorting on them, packed them in GrainPro and shipped them to the Annex in Oakland, CA.

<< Test First Name >> I could wax poetic for hours on these coffees. But you wouldn't believe they could taste that good. So check them out here and request samples. We have already sold 10% of them and it hasn't even landed. So get on it. Samples will be shipping next week. Coffees arrive end of July.

Kenya Harvest Update June 2017

Harvest Update:

Kenya is reeling under the onslaught of global climate change. Overwhelming rains during the dry season, followed by drought during the wet season means that patterns and practices are in flux and chaos. Overall volume of coffee is down 25-30%. Which sucks.

Since the trees were stressed and had to struggle in the drought after flowering sweetness, complexity and unique flavors is up a lot! Which rocks.

The Central main crop harvest is over but the fly crop centrals just started harvesting while we were in Kenya. They will continue harvesting till August or so.

The Eastern Main Crop also started in June and continues till August. So the regions of Meru and Machakos  are about to enter their main crop harvest period. Luckily the weather patterns so far have been nearly perfect in the easter regions and Meru in particular. The harvest looks like it might be 5-10% higher AND the early harvest flavors are incredible as the long dry spell was perfectly timed to develop deep sweetness and complex malic and phosphoric acidity.

We will be working with several import partners to bring in a large amount of coffees from our direct partnership with Meru coffee factories as well as several of our own direct imports. Stay tuned.
